After preparing a delicious breakfast for my husband and I the LAST thing I want to do is clean up. I’m notorious for letting the bowls sit until they are caked and have to be soaked and scrubbed (yes, I know its easier to just do it right away, but I am lazy!).

The waffle iron is no exception.

I can’t stand cleaning the waffle iron because things always get baked onto it, AND my waffle iron doesn’t have detachable plates so its a pain to clean.

Until now.

Let me tell you just how easy it is to keep your waffle iron clean.

How to clean a waffle iron:

First: NEVER use cooking spray. Seriously.

Did you know it says that right in the owner’s manual? True story. I didn’t know either, but that’s what creates that gross, sticky residue. Use butter instead.

Second: Preheat your waffle iron. Take several paper towels, soak them in water and wring out until just damp.

Place them in the heated waffle iron and close.

Watch carefully for several minutes as the steam loosens the gunk.

Third: Wipe clean with a damp sponge or a clean damp paper towel. Shake out any loose crumbs. That’s it. Simple!

So there you have it. Now you know how to clean a waffle iron the quick and easy way!

Just wanted to add a suggestion that works for me. Shortening has a very high burn point so it doesn’t make the brown sticky residue that a lot of oils do when cooked - so I keep a box of shortening in the fridge and use a pastry brush to ‘grease’ any and every pan with it that I can before cooking - including muffin tins, instant pot, crock pot, lasagna pans etc - they come perfectly clean after cooking with no burned on residue. No more brown cookie sheets and baking pans! And for baking, Ido the shortening with the brush and then sprinkle with flour or cocoa and shake it around to have a prepared baking pan that will easily come clean afterwards. I use it for the waffle iron too. But thanks for this tip, I will use it when mine needs cleaning. All the best!

My waffle manual actually says to spray it before adding waffle batter lol... I read the manual every time I make waffles because I don’t make them that often. But I did just make them and that’s what made me open this link and why I remember that it says to use spray.

A silicone pastry or basting brush works well to remove crumbs. I use a more than damp tea towel in a warm waffle iron to remove grease and other grime.
